Emerson once said, "The best effect of a fine person is felt after we have left their presence". Journals, 1839
I interpert this as, What matters most is what people remember when you are gone.
Another author that has influenced me and said something similar to Emerson is Chuck Palahniuk, He said, "Our goal isn't to last forever, it is to create something that will". First impressions matter, but they are just the determinants of whether you will engage in anything further than a friendly greeting. It is what comes next in the dialogue and body language that matters most. Creating a lasting impression is what is most important. Keeping people wondering, wanting more, perplexed with your personality, thats when they begin to know who you are.
